"A shadow is an area where direct light from a light source cannot reach due to obstruction by an object. It occupies all of the space behind an opaque object with light in front of it" (wikipedia)
which basically means that the presence of light is essential for the existence of shadow.
No light. No shadow... Remember that ( note to self )

I am joining Ariane and her "shadow" theme.
In absence of own artwork, due to laziness,
I share a favourite painting with the most
tranquil shadows

by the Spanish painter Diaz Olano (1860-1937)

Enjoy your Sunday!

  9. Dear Demie,
thats the place where I wanna be right now!

And, in my meditation about shadow, I've come to the insight there is no shadow without an object.
And without light and shadow there is no position fixing... flying or lying?
Isn't it interesting what kind of ideas comes with a drawing challenge ;-)

Thank you, dear Demie for introducing Diaz Olano. Never heard of him before.

Have a nice start into next week.
    Love
    Ariane.

  10. It is a wonderful, calm picture though! I like it and I like the definition of shadow - so logical but nothing I would have thought about! Nice to have you back, Demie! Christa

  11. that's a very interesting note. as i was musing over this subject i came to the conclusion that if light falls straight on an object, the shadow would exist, but in a sense eaten up by the object, for it would not find any room to cast a shadow. because of the light.

i don't know olano, but now you have introduced me. this scene is so peaceful and tranquil.

    thank you for this!

  15. Beautiful painting. I never really thought about having to have light to have a shadow but it does make sense. My favorite images are those that have a light streaming down into an area that is otherwise shaded...like a wooded area where the light filters through the trees. :)

I hope all is well with you!

    1. yes indeed... but I did like the point Ariane made.
      About no object no shadow...
Sometimes one might have to move the object,
in case one finds oneself in the shaddow I mean ; )

    2. ...or move away from the object of course ...

  22. Det sà ut som rene dròmmestedet. Fred og ro og en god bok. Helt fantastisk. Jeg har sett meg ut et slikt sted i den nye hagen min, under et oliventre. Der har jeg tenkt à tilbringe sommeren. Mà nok ut og kjòpe fluktstol snart....

Takk for koselig kommentar inne hos meg. Vet du forresten hva jeg "savner"? GRESK HONNING! Selv om den italienske honningen er god sà er det ingenting som slàr den greske timianhonningen....
